I am a Translational Science Lead at Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge, UK and Senior lecturer in bioinformatics at the University of Bath, Bath, UK. My research evaluates the impact of vaccine on bacterial population and antimicrobial resistance through analyzing large-scale of genomic data, with focus on translating the findings to inform public health policies.

Currently, I am leading the Global Pneumococcal Sequencing (GPS) project, in which an unprecedented number of S. pneumonia genomes (n>40,000) were generated. The large-scale of data made possible new lines of inquiry into pneumococcal biology, disease, and epidemiology. By analyzing the large-scale of genome data, my research findings found the reduction in antimicrobial resistance after the use of vaccine and identified vaccine escape and guided the next generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccine formulation and provided information to inform vaccine policy in different countries.
