Joana Gomes-Silva
Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the microscopic world and I had the opportunity to study Microbiology, eventually specializing in Medical Microbiology. Throughout my studies, I developed a particular interest in gram-positive bacteria. Today, after spending 8 years working in Professor Mario Ramirez's lab, I feel incredibly fortunate to study and continuously learn about the pneumococcus bacterium. Our work continues to contribute to better understand the distribution of clones and serotypes, antibiotic resistance and virulence, as well as obtaining epidemiological information that allows us to understand the benefits of vaccination.
Outside the lab, I really enjoy spending time in nature, I am passionate about almost all genres of music, I am addicted to reading fantasy, romance and thriller books, and I love traveling and photography.
Oh, I also adore my cat, Cookie! :)
