Giuseppe Ercoli
Giuseppe Ercoli is a senior research fellow at the University College London. He has been working for more than 15 years in the development of vaccines against bacterial pathogens both in industry and academia.
Giuseppe completed his PhD at Novartis Vaccines in Siena (Italy) where he studied new vaccine approaches for non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae, his contributions resulted in the patented design of a genetically modified strain capable to increase production of outer membrane vesicles. In 2014 he moved to academia to the University of Leicester (UK) where he discovered the intracellular survival and replication of pneumococcus during sepsis, a work that provided novel insights into the pathogenesis of S. pneumoniae.
Since 2017 Giuseppe is working at University College London on novel protein-based vaccines against pneumococcus and mouse models of bacterial colonization to study natural immunity.
Giuseppe is a recognised member of the vaccine and pneumococcal community, regularly presenting at international conferences such as Europneumo, ISPPD and Bactivac. Recently, he has co-hosted and organised Europneumo 2023, showcasing his commitment to promoting scientific exchange and collaboration. He is an active member of several microbial and vaccine organisations (Microbiology Society UK, Bactivac, HicVac, MPRU).
