Catarina Silva-Costa

Catarina Silva-Costa is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology and a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at Faculdade de Medicina of Universidade de Lisboa.

After a PhD in the epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes infections and macrolide resistance, she shifted her focus towards the study infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Her current research interests are the epidemiology of invasive and non-invasive pneumococcal infections, more specifically serotype distribution and vaccine impact, as well as antimicrobial resistance. Besides this, she is actively involved in a project of molecular diagnosis in pneumococcal pediatric infections, namely complicated pneumonia and meningitis. In the last years, she was also involved in a project aiming to expand the molecular diagnosis of pediatric complicated pneumonias by including other bacterial species potentially responsible for these infections.

Catarina is also involved in science outreach activities in schools, where she gives presentations on microbiology and engage students in practical tasks related to the study of the human microbiota.
